Managing Corneal Abrasions in the PACU

Apply erythromycin ophthalmic ointment to the affected eye 4 times a day for 5 days. If the patient is allergic to erythromycin then bacitracin and polymixin B ophthalmic ointment can be used instead.

Do not use local anesthetics or other eye drops since they can cause scarring.

Call ophthalmology (650-723-6995) if the patient continues to have pain 48 hours later.
